Worth seeing castle complex with good outdoor dining.

Very beautiful, large complex in private hands which was first mentioned in documents in 1217, destroyed in the meantime, but rebuilt within 10 years. Still in good structural condition today

The castle in Eisenbach was probably built as a road security castle by the Counts of Ziegenhain as the chief bailiffs of the Fulda monastery around or before 1200 and given as a fief to the Knights of Eisenbach. The castle was first mentioned in the Hanau documents in 1217 under Cunradus de Isenbach, but was destroyed in 1269 by the Prince Abbot of Fulda, Bertho II von Leibolz, in the course of his fight against robber barons (Fulda monastery feud). The feudal knight Eisenbach rebuilt it within ten years. After the Eisenbach family died out in 1429, Hermann Riedesel (the "Golden Knight") received the fief. The castle lords now called themselves Riedesel zu Eisenbach. In 1432 they became hereditary marshals of the Landgraves of Hesse. When the Riedesel family was later divided into different lines, Eisenbach always remained joint property. Two of the lines expanded the castle into a palace in the 16th century. Due to its key role in introducing the Lutheran Reformation, Eisenbach Castle was popularly nicknamed the "Upper Hessian Wartburg". Hermann IV Riedesel of Eisenbach had adopted the Lutheran faith through his connection to the Landgrave of Hesse during a meeting with Luther's fellow reformer Philipp Melanchthon and thus introduced the Reformation in the Junkerland of Riedesel in 1527. The Riedesel of Eisenbach were elevated to the rank of baron by Emperor Leopold in 1680.

A very well preserved castle. Well worth a visit.

The whole slope is an excellently maintained… beautifully landscaped garden… fruit cultivation… herb and flower beds… very finely labelled
