The Alteburg, also called Altenburg, is a derelict moated castle in the Alteburgpark in the town of Schotten in the Vogelsberg district in Hesse. An early ring wall system can be assumed to be the predecessor of the Alteburg. Finds made in 1960 point to the Hallstatt period. The moated castle was probably developed around 1000 on an artificially raised castle hill, surrounded by a circular moat fed from the Nidda, and served to monitor an important highway that led along the Nidda over the heights of the Vogelsberg. After the castle was destroyed by the Rhenish League of Cities in 1382, it was not rebuilt. A residential building was probably built on the remains of the castle in 1515. The Alteburg was first mentioned in writing in 1547, when it was included in the documents as the “old bower”. Tilemann von Günderrode (1512–1550), Chancellor of Landgrave Philip I of Hesse, received the dilapidated complex and other property in Schotten from the Landgrave as a fief. His son Wilhelm (1550–1607), who became a colonel in the Hesse-Kassel service, had the remains of the castle and the old house removed around the turn of the century, probably in 1605, and a stately half-timbered house with a gable roof was built on parts of the massive foundation walls as a widow's residence. The circular moat fed by the Nidda still surrounds the half-timbered building, which is still very well preserved and surrounded by trees. The property is privately owned and not open to the public. The Alteburgpark park with the moat, which faces Nidda and federal highway 276, was purchased and created by the city of Schotten and is freely accessible. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alteburg_(Schotten)

Eppstein Castle is a Gothic castle of the Eppstein family with stepped gables. Rebuilt in 1385 after a feud in 1382, it burned down completely at the end of the 19th century. Its interior was later rebuilt to house the district court. https://www.hotel-zentrale.de/fotos/512-Schotten/8579-Schotten-Eppsteiner-Schlossjpg
