The Augusta Canal Trail is built over the old towpath of the canal and is situated between the Augusta Canal and the Savannah River. The path is mostly flat and well maintained.

The Augusta Canal Headgates were added to National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and in 1978, they were declared a National Historic Landmark. The canal and the mills that were located at this spot played an important role in the development of this area.
