This is a short but high ascent of a scramble called Foxes Rake. It is a relatively easy scramble but if wet would be very slippy. This takes you up to a plateau where Foxes Tarn should be if not in drought (it was) and then you can choose if you want to play and scramble again up stagger up what was grass banking as such. Once at the top you can tap out on Scafell Cairn the 2nd highest Fell in the Lakes.

A super cool historical spot to visit. Once you get up there, you really understand why the Romans built their camp on this site. The views across the valley to the sea are incredible, and the full 360° panorama is stunning, taking in most of the tallest moutains in Cumbria. The ruins, though not heavily intact, still give a clear sense of the camp’s layout and how different sections may have been used. More than anything, standing there makes it easy to see why and how the Romans chose this location—a fascinating stop along the way.

With a gradient of 20-27%, this section between Broad Crag and Scafell Pike is truly challenging! Surefootedness and sturdy footwear are essential. Not for the faint-hearted. Be especially careful in wet conditions.

Stunning waterfall

There’s a fantastic viewpoint you can walk out on to, which gives you an impressive view of the falls

Stanley Ghyll flows down from Birker Fell to the River Esk near Boot. There is a steep path which follows the stream and passes the spectacular Stanley Force.

Broad Stand is not a way for walkers to gain access to Scafell from Mickledore. It is often used by rock climbers in descent but it is a serious climb and many accidents have happened here. If you are trying to access Scafell, descend south towards Eskdale then scramble up Foxes Gully to Foxes Tarn and the scree slope to the summit. This is safe in all but winter conditions.

This bridge over Hardknott Ghyll, is also known as Jubilee Bridge, and is at the start of the path that leads up towards Harter Fell from the parking area at the bottom of Hard Knott Pass. The Ghyll would be difficult to cross much of the year without this bridge.

Foxes Rake up to the tarn is the “easy” way to Scafell from Mickledore but it isn’t without its challenges. In summer it is usually dry so is a straightforward scramble up. In winter it can become a serious undertaking under snow, and without snow the water can turn to ice which persists because the sun never gets here much in winter. At least it is easier than some of the other alternatives.

The step is a tricky decent before the final push

The path descending to Cam Spout divides so there are paths both sides of the waterfall. From above it isn’t clear which to take. The OS show the path on the NE (true left) bank while Harvey Maps show the path on the SW (true right) bank. I recommend the OS one on north east (true left) bank of the stream, having done both. It is a better path and easier. From below, cross the stream below the falls and go up the path to the right of the stream.
