The first 3 miles of Mount Ida Trail are an easy-to-follow and non-technical consistent hike up to the ridgeline. The last 2 miles to the summit are a tundra trail of gray granite and quartz rock, and at this point, the trail can be a little difficult to find, but the dirt on the rocks makes it more detectable. This trail is not considered dangerous, but it can be very exposed to the sun, wind, cold temperatures, lightning, and unpredictable weather changes, so it is recommended to have sun protection and trekking boots, and also having trekking poles can be helpful for the last part. During summer, the thunderstorms in the afternoon can be quite dangerous, make sure to check the weather before hiking up.

Mount Ida is a remarkable summit located in the Front Range; with a height of 12,899 ft it delivers spectacular views of the park. When at the top expect to have a panoramic view of the surroundings, including the Never Summer Mountains, the Mummy Range, Mt. Julian, Cracktop Mountain, and Longs Peak, among others.

James Peak is a 13,294-foot summit in the James Peak Wilderness. The Ute Trail and James Peak trail carry you to the ridge, which is steep at times but never calls for more than class 1 travel. There are numerous other 12,000 and 13,000 foot peaks in this area of the wilderness, and there is a multitude of alpine lakes in the surrounding basins.

Mount Flora rises to 13,146 feet and offers unobstructed views of the surrounding peaks and forests. The summit can be reached from multiple angles, but it is most often approached from the Berthoud Pass side.

Paiute Peak is situated just to the west of Mount Audubon. It is one of the more impressive of all the Indian Peaks along the Continental Divide.

Twin Cones can be reached via a lovely mountain trail leading you into Velasquez Peak Wilderness. From the top, you will enjoy views above the treeline of the neighboring mountains.

At the top of Shadow Mountain, you will find the only fire lookout left in Rocky Mountain National Park. You will also find stunning views of Shadow Mountain Lake, Grand Lake, and Lake Granby. The scenery is breathtaking and definitely worth the climb!

At just under 13,000 feet, Mount Ida is one of Rocky Mountain National Park's gems! The run via Mount Ida Trail is breathtaking and relatively easy to follow. Only at the top might the final summit push be a bit trickier on looser granite but the panoramic views are absolutely worth every step!
