Bench Tor is a beautiful tor above the wooded Dart Gorge. The outcrop stands proud on a spur that overlooks the valley and it provides magnificent views on a clear day. It's well known to rock climbers and is home to routes of varying difficulty.

One of Dartmoor's very best swimming spots, Sharrah Pool is an utter delight. It's accessed by beautiful riverside trails that are nice and shaded on warm days. With its cascades, calm areas and helpful rocky steps, its an idyllic place for a dip.

Set in a wooded valley in the heart of Dartmoor, Fernworthy supplies fresh drinking water to the towns and cities around the moor. The sloping, open grassland to the south of the water is a fantastic viewpoint and a great place from which to spot wildlife.

Convenient parking when driving across Dartmoor. Pay and display parking, toilets and visitor centre. Great place to start a hike.

The Dartmoor National Park Visitor Centre is a great hub to start a walk from, or visit mid-hike. There is a car park, public toilets and shop here, stocked with everything from maps to locally produced crafts, as well as a water refill station and lovely, friendly staff. There's also an exhibition with lots to learn for all ages. The commoners, those who have centuries old rights over the owners’ land, named this very old hawthorn, the Umbrella Tree. It is a significant feature of the landscape. Sheep can often be seen sheltering under the tree. Holne Moor has been a farmed landscape for thousands of years. 6 commoners use their rights to graze their ponies, cattle and sheep on the common. The graziers play a valuable role in managing the land for nature, biodiversity, archaeology and recreation. Each flock or herd on the commons has an area of land where they stay without fencing, this is known as a ‘lear’ in the South West, or a ‘heft’ in other areas. This way of shared management is called commoning and has protected some of the UK’s most spectacular landscapes for thousands of years. Holne Moor is owned by three organisations and one individual who retains some mineral and sporting rights. There are extensive grazing rights registered for Holne Moor for 47 separate holdings but only 7 active graziers. The active rights are for cattle, sheep and ponies with a mix of breeds including registered Dartmoor Ponies, South Devon cattle and Galloways. Sheep tend to be of hardy upland stock such as Swaledale, Scotch Blackface and Cheviot although local breeds such as Whiteface Dartmoor are also turned out on the moor. The graziers play a valuable role in managing the land for nature, biodiversity, archaeology and recreation.

A beautifully quaint part of the country and such a nice spot to include on a run.

The Hamlyn’s (Holne Moor) leat takeoff is from the O Brook. For much of its journey on the high moor, it runs parallel with the Wheal Emma Leat. It still runs and cascades into the Holy Brook (via Great Combe).

The "waterfall" is smaller than you think, but still beautiful to look at.

Grey Wethers are a pair of prehistoric stone circles below Sittaford Tor. There are about 30 granite blocks. You pass here riding the bridleway from Postbridge.
