Scenic route across Sleights Moor, connecting Sleights village with the upland ridge near Leas Head Farm. It was historically used by farmers, drovers, and quarrymen, providing access to grazing land and stone quarries on the moor. The track forms part of the network of estate and toll roads built in the 18th–19th centuries, when landowners improved communications across the moors.

A tiny hamlet with scattered cottages, farms, and a chapel, giving it a secluded, timeless feel. The road through the village winds down a steep road with a picturesque ford that crosses the Little Beck stream.

Unique for its 1835 George Stephenson tunnel and its role as both a working engine shed and a visitor hub, the station is quite spectacular even on a dreary winter's day when there are no events on and no locomotives in the station. A flashback to the mid-twentieth century.

Ancient semi-natural woodland that covers about 26 hectares and has been continuously wooded for centuries. Really nice walk, some of it on uneven ground perilously close to the quite high and steep banks of May Beck and Little Beck. Provides a respite from the biting moorland wind in winter.

Mainly easy going, very steep steps and some rocky areas to navigate. £4 parking all day in the centre of the village.

End of the Coast to Coast Walk.

Whilst this waterfall is relatively accessible, as others point out it is a bit of a scramble, with the rocks still quite slippery and treacherous in the height of summer, as they are permanently in the shade and damp. In summer, the valley that the track to the waterfall runs through provides welcome respite from the heat of the day.

Tiny little hamlet surrounded by lots of public footpaths and bridleways, can be easily reached from Goathland via a dismantled railway track that is also a public footpath.

Useful waypoint, the track to Mallyan Spout runs along the eastern side of the Mallyan Spout Bar, very easy to find (see photos), and just to the west of the hotel is the bridleway leading up onto Moss Rigg, for easy Moors access.

Small yet picturesque and peaceful tarn just to the south of Goathland on Moss Rigg, useful waypoint/marker on the way up Two Howes Rigg towards Simon's Howe. Good quality track runs all the way to Simon's Howe, relatively easy in the summer but looks as though it could get quite boggy in winter.

Idyllic and stunning Moors village that became prominent in the 19th Century as a spa destination, but most (older!) people will remember it as the fictional village of Aidensfield from the television drama "Heartbeat". You can still see Aidensfield Post Office, Aidensfield Stores, the old police car, and of course Scripps Funeral Services and Aidensfield Garage. A very popular destination in the spring and summer, being served by the North York Moors Railway, with easy access to nearby Moorland. What a interesting place this must of taken a lot of making back in the day 1790.

Littlebeck is a tiny village with a lenghty past; it is hard to imagine today's picturesque rural idyll was actually once a centre of alum mining in the 17th to 19th centuries. Alum, by the way, is used in dyeing as well as tanning leather. A hundred tons of shale would be produced in order to extract one ton of alum, so it seems remarkable the surrounding land appears so unscarred.

It is said the Hermitage dates back to the 18th century and that it was the home of a hermit who lived a life of foraging for fuel and food in the woods. The Hermitage is ideal for an emergency bivvy shelter.

The beautiful 70 ft high Mallyan Spout waterfall is the tallest one in the North York Moors National Park. It is not recommended for anyone with mobility issues as it involves scrambling over rocks.
