The Nymphenburg Canal in Munich, part of the northern Munich canal system, supplies Nymphenburg Palace Park with water from the Würm River in its western section, also known as the Pasing Canal or Pasing-Nymphenburg Canal. Its eastern section, also called the Palace Canal, serves a more ceremonial purpose. The Nymphenburg Canal begins as the Pasing-Nymphenburg Canal, branching off the Würm River in the Pasing district. The amount of water diverted from the Würm can be regulated by a weir. Initially, the canal runs parallel to the river for a short distance in a north-northeast direction. After a few hundred meters, the two waterways are reconnected by an ice-release channel. Near Pipping, the canal turns and runs past Obermenzing in a straight line eastward, directly toward Nymphenburg Palace. It originally formed the visual axis between the palace terrace and St. Wolfgang Church in Pipping, but this axis is now overgrown and obstructed. From the point where it branches off from the Würm River to the entrance gate of the palace park, the canal is approximately 2.8 km long and has a drop of four meters along this stretch. The Würm loses about a third of its water (approx. 2 m³/s) through the canal's outflow. After entering the palace park, the canal feeds the cascade located at its western end, as well as the entire park water system, including the large (Badenburg) and small (Pagodenburg) lakes (48° 9′ 25″ N, 11° 27′ 48″ E | OSM | ). These include the Central Canal in the western line of sight of the palace, the Southern Canal, which flows through Lake Badenburg and the "little village," and the Hartmannshofer Brook, which flows north from Lake Pagodenburg through the Kugelweiher pond and continues outside the palace grounds through Hartmannshofer Park. The canal's water also powers Nymphenburg Palace's pumping stations, which pressurize the water for the fountains in the palace park. Statues at the Great Cascade Between the upper and lower cascade basins, on either side of the falling water, are two reclining figures with urns by Giuseppe Volpini, symbolizing the Isar and Danube rivers (1715–1717). The cascade ensemble was initially complemented by two further statues by Giuseppe Volpini: Hercules with a lion (1718/19) and Minerva with an owl, spear, and shield (1722–23). These were originally located on the garden façade of Schleißheim Palace. Later, the statues of Flora (1725) and Aeolus (1725), created by Charles Dubut, were added. Around 1737, Guillaume de Grof created the statue of Neptune with a seahorse. Decades later, three more statues were added: Amphitrite with a Dolphin (1775) by Charles de Groff, and Mars with Sword and Shield (commissioned by Ignaz Günther) and Minerva with Sword and Shield (without an owl!), both by Roman Anton Boos. The Olympic Stadium in Munich is an architectural masterpiece and a historic venue, built for the 1972 Olympic Games. Until 2005, it was the home of FC Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 Munich, before professional football moved to the Allianz Arena. Its most striking feature is the spectacular tent-like roof structure, which appears to float weightlessly over the stadium, the Olympic Hall, and other buildings. Designed by architect Frei Otto, it was a groundbreaking innovation at the time. The entire complex is a listed historical monument, which has prevented major alterations.
