From here, you will get superb views of Haweswater as well as the Long Stile Ridge

This is the view of Rough Crag on the way up to High Street. A classic Lake District ridge. Its rugged spine rises sharply above Haweswater.

Blea Water is the deepest tarn in the Lake District (over 60m depth) It sits in hollow grounds excavated by the glacial age. You can get a good view of it from the High Street ridge. Now managed by United Utilities, it feeds into Small Water who in turn flows into Haweswater Reservoir.

Conservation is a big part of the area. RSPB and United Waters have joined forces to offers a good habitat to peregrine falcons, redstarts, and ring ouzels as a few examples of the bird-species and ensuring that the forest offers a good nesting and foraging ground for red squirrels. A donation cairn, to support the RSPB’s work at Wild Haweswater, is situated in the car park. They suggest a donation of £2, but any amount large or small is gratefully received. Please note that only cash donations can be made in the cairn as the lack of mobile phone reception means they are unable to take card payments. However, if you wish to send an online donation to support their work, you can do so here. There is also a Mountain Rescue cairn in the car park, you are kindly encourage you to support their life-saving work if you feel able to.

High street is the summit of a very wide ridge. Beware it gets incredibly windy up there - don't forget gloves and layers, in particular from October through April ! On a clear day, you will get superb views over: the Pennines; The Helvellyn range and the Southern Fells. First used by the roman for defense; the Ridge is the highest roman road in Britain. In the 18th and 19th century; the wild plateau was used for local fairs. Stray sheep would be returned to their owners and horses would be raced on the ridge ! I personally used this ridge for an 8 miles walk taking in Mardale Ill Bell, High Street and Kidsty Pike. You could take in 2 further wainwrights with very little efforts: The Knott and Rampsgill Head. And if you are into Long Distance walking: there is full south-to-north traverse of the High Street ridge from Ings near Windermere to the Eamont valley at the northern end of Ullswater stretching 19-mile and taking in 12 summits.

The stone built shelter will provide a good spot for a tea break on your way to Mardale Ill Bell and High Street from Haweswater via Small Water. It is at less than 2 miles from Haweswater head car-park so may be too early for lunch yet.

As the highest point in the far eastern fells the views are stunning when the weather is good.
