Barfield Crescent Park sits at the basin of the West Fork Stones River and features a network of trails with varied terrain, winding alongside the river and through hills. The park includes playgrounds and picnic areas, offering a pleasant environment for hiking, running, and mountain biking.

The Murfreesboro Greenway System has over 17 miles of looping trails, bridges and boardwalks for enjoying Murfreesboro's beautiful natural riverside setting. Sixteen trailheads along the seven greenway sections provide access for hiking, walking, running, and bicycling.

J. Percy Priest Lake was created by the construction of the J. Percy Priest Dam on the Stones River and spans over 14,000 acres. The lake features clear water surrounded by woodlands and rolling hills, with both sandy and rocky beaches, as well as picnic areas along its shores. In addition to the scenic trails that encircle the lake, it is good for fishing, kayaking, and swimming.

Sharp Springs Park is a preserved area adjacent to Stones River. The park features a network of paved and gravel trails, along with wooden boardwalks. It encompasses woodlands and wetlands, with scenic ponds that offer a healthy habitat for a diverse range of birds and other wildlife.

The Flat Rock Cedar and Barrens Nature Preserve is composed of a rare ecosystem known as Cedar Barrens, which is characterized by open woodlands, cedar trees, grasses, and wildflowers. The preserve has a tranquil setting with few visitors, and its well-maintained trails provide a relaxing walk for nature enthusiasts. Spring and summer are the best seasons to see the variety of wildflowers in bloom. Note that there is no drinkable water available on-site.

Stones River Battlefield features a network of trails that provides an immersive experience of the historic grounds where the Battle of Stones River was fought. The well-maintained paths, scenic river views, and preserved natural surroundings make for a pleasant and engaging walk.

Long Hunter boasts over 30 miles of shoreline on Percy Priest Lake, making it a haven for boating, fishing (known for its large crappie population), and swimming. The park offers educational programs to connect visitors with the natural world and Tennessee's history.
