The Porte de Dunkerque dates back to the Middle Ages and served as one of the main gateways to the fortified city of Cassel. The gate is built in a robust medieval style, with thick stone walls and an imposing arch marking the passage. The architecture reflects the military and strategic function of the gate.

The Remparts de Cassel are the historic fortifications that surround the charming town of Cassel, perched high on Mont Cassel in French Flanders. These ancient ramparts bear witness to the region’s rich and tumultuous history and offer visitors a fascinating glimpse into the past. Cassel’s elevated position on Mont Cassel, one of the highest points in the area, made it a strategically important stronghold for a long time. Cassel was often the scene of military confrontations due to its strategic importance. In the 17th century, the famous French military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban strengthened the fortifications of Cassel.
