Savonlinna is a picturesque city in eastern Finland, known for its medieval Olavinlinna Castle and stunning lake views. The Savonlinna harbour is connected to the Saimaa lake system, offering scenic boat tours during the summer.

Admission is €12 p.p. and a guide is included. We took part in the English-speaking tour, which we found very informative and entertaining. Admission is always worth it! Wanderfalke@ already reported that you can only climb a tower as part of a guided tour.

Parallel to the railway line, you drive along the water in the north of Savonlinna and can take a break in the surrounding meadows.

In Savonlinna you can admire one of the best-preserved medieval buildings in Northern Europe: the Olafsburg. The "Olavinlinna" (the Finnish name of the castle) was built on the rocky island of Kyrönsaari and is enthroned amidst the seascape that surrounds Savonlinna. You can reach the castle via a ferry. On the Uferradweg you can take a look at the stone bridge that takes you to Olafsburg Fortress.

It is definitely worth taking a guided tour. Because only then can you climb the towers and hear nice stories about the castle.
