10월 24, 2025, Citadel of Verdun

The museum offers a good insight into soldiers' lives during World War I. Using an augmented reality helmet, visitors can travel through the underground citadel. Admission is €16 per person (as of October 2025). However, for background information, it is recommended to visit the Verdun Memorial beforehand.

You can walk all the way around the ramparts. We found it unique and impressive. The museum was also interesting.

Medieval city gate from the 14th century, built as part of the Grand Rempart around the lower town of Verdun. The gate was financed by Wautrec, a wealthy citizen and alderman, after the granting of Verdun's status as a free imperial city in 1374. The gate consists of two semi-circular towers with a portcullis and the remains of a drawbridge. It has been a listed historical monument since 1881.

Since 2006, a monument has stood on the hill of Douaumont in memory of the 30,000 Muslim soldiers who died for France during the First World War. Inaugurated by President Jacques Chirac, it consists of a semicircular gallery with Arab architectural elements. In the middle is a column with the inscription: “À la mémoire des soldats musulmans morts pour la France”. The monument recognizes the diversity of the French army and honors the contribution of soldiers from North Africa and other parts of the then French empire.

This monument depicts a recumbent French soldier and is dedicated to André Thomé, a member of parliament who volunteered for the front and was killed at Verdun on 10 March 1916. Although exempted from service as a politician, he chose to fight. The sculpture, by Alexandre Descatoire, is entitled Le Soldat du Droit – the soldier of the right – and symbolises the sacrifice of just men for a higher ideal.

The Saint Paul Gate was built into the city walls in the 19th century and consists of two arches (entrance/exit), each arch having a drawbridge. It connected the Verdun station, where the conscripts came from, to the city centre and in particular to the Jeanne d'Arc barracks. In the 1920s, the destruction of the city walls, already weakened by the bombardments, was completed. Only the Saint Paul Gate was spared and was embellished with commemorative columns in honour of the victory of Verdun and the reconstruction of the city.

History of the monument The Friendly Holland Monument, located in the town of Verdun, is a poignant symbol of the friendship between the Netherlands and France, forged in the fires of the First World War. In 1916, during one of the deadliest battles in history, French troops fought a fierce battle to defend Verdun. The Netherlands, a neutral country during the conflict, offered humanitarian aid by setting up the French National Committee for Aid to the War Wounded (CNABG). This committee, led by the Count of Villeneuve, played a major role in organising medical aid and assistance for wounded French soldiers. Dutch nurses worked tirelessly to treat the wounded and comfort the soldiers, saving countless lives and strengthening the ties between the two countries. This act of generosity and solidarity was commemorated with the construction of the Friendly Holland Monument. Architectural features The Friendly Holland Monument is a breathtaking work of architecture. It stands proudly in the Japiot Park of Verdun, designed by the Dutch architect John HW Leliman and inaugurated in 1938. The monument consists of three main elements. Small memorial column so that Henri Waechter would never be forgotten. Note the concrete block with iron rod in it next to the memorial. Such blocks were used to attach barbed wire. You will find many of these remains in the entire area.
