Steep hill to get to but worth it

St Laurence’s is a Grade I-listed church on the outskirts of Meriden. The parish church was built in the 12th century and modified over the next 200 years. In the chancel, you can see two effigies which date from 1400 and 1450.

Meriden is hailed as the historical centre of historical England and a monument on the village green marks the point. However, this claim was shown to be inaccurate upon investigation in 1920. Nevertheless, it remains a pleasant village with a few places for food and drink and shops, making it a good place for a pit-stop. There is also accommodation for anyone completing the Millennium Way or Heart of England Way long-distance walks, which both pass close to Meriden.

It is the town at the centre of the country, furthest distance in any direction to the coast... There is a nice pond in the town...

St Laurence’s is an Anglican Church in the Diocese of Coventry. Reputedly founded by Lady Godiva, the church goes back to Norman times: people have worshipped God in this place for almost 1000 years. Perhaps it is because of these centuries of prayer, but many who visit our church fall in love with its peaceful and prayerful atmosphere.

Meriden is a quietly understated location with an ancient stone cross marking the historic centre of England on its village green. On the same green there is also a national monument to the cyclists who lost their lives serving their country in the world wars. Other than the monuments there is nothing to mark this location; no fuss made, no visitors centre, no tourist information, just a co-op, chip shop and a newsagent. Perhaps worth visiting, it's on the route of a lot of footpaths and there are good cycle paths on the sides of roads but blink and you'll miss it.
