This is a nice gravel route. The surface was hard packed with only a few small puddles.

An iron bridge constructed in 1829 as a part of Lord Tredegar's estate.

This is a very flat landscape called the Gwent Levels, consisting of quiet roads running alongside mudflats and saltmarshes. It is part of NCN route 4, which links Greenwich with Fishguard in Wales.

The bridge was erected as part of a carriage drive between Ruperra Castle and Machen church, probably coinciding with the appointment of Augustus Morgan, son of Sir Charles Morgan, to the living of Machen circa 1828

Caerleon Amphitheatre would have provided bloody entertainment for the Roman soldiers stationed at Isca Augusta. It is thought that seating accommodated 6,000 spectators, encircling an arena in which wild animals, gladiators and other unfortunates did battle.

Wentwood Forest main loop trails are well maintained and provide for an easy-going route which is suitable to most abilities. The paths criss-crossing the interior can get muddy in wetter months.

The iconic Newport Transporter Bridge is a type of suspended ferry with a large zig zag staircase spanning the River Usk.

This short cycleway links Pye Corner with Corporation Road, avoiding busier roads through the woods and past the sludge beds. It's gravelly but pretty light, so you should be able to get through here on most kinds of bikes when it's dry, at least. You can pick up another cycle lane that runs alongside Meadows Road if you want to head north from Pye Corner.
