The Black Down stone circle consists of five "totems" built from local Forest Marble stone. One is aligned with true north, and the other four with midwinter and midsummer solstice sunrises and sunsets. In good weather at each of these times, the suns full disc will shine through the opening of the totems, lighting up the central rock of Portland stone, providing a modern take on ancient monuments.

A weird name considering it's just a small car park. but, it's free, and if you're smitten by free things, you'll be smitten by this corner. lol

In the nature reserve of Valley of Stones, you can observe a wide variety of butterflies and wildflowers in its chalk grassland, as well as all the sarsen boulders scattered throughout the southern valley, remnants from the last ice age.

To the north of this stretch of the path, you can see two large tumuli, also known as barrows or burial mounds. They typically date from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age, although some may be from later periods.

The Hardy Monument is 22m high and was completed in 1844 to recognise the achievements of Sir Thomas Hardy, Flag Captain for lord Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar. It's now managed by the National Trust. Amazing views from here over Weymouth, Portland and along the coast as well as inland.
