James the Greater (the Latin 'major' is not translated as 'great' in English), to whom this church near Bratton was dedicated, was, together with his brother, part of the inner circle of Jesus' disciples. In his version of the "Good News" (this is the meaning of the word "gospel"), the Evangelist Mark enumerates a list of the apostles: "James, the son of Zebedee, and John, the brother of James—them he surnamed Boanerges, which means Sons of Thunder" (Mark 3:17). They were said to have had strong tempers, but were faithful followers of Jesus Christ, in whom they recognized the promised Messiah. According to the Acts of the Apostles, James was executed for his faith. His tomb in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia (Spain), is one of the most famous and important pilgrimage destinations in the world.

Great cafe/farmshop with a pub next door

The oldest of the Wiltshire white horses this was originally cut in 1772 and restored in 1778. There was evidence of an older horse here facing the other way, but no strong evidence suggests how old that was. In 1872/1873 the horse was considered to be losing its shape, it was re cut and edging stones added. In 1957 the horse was concreted to preserve it. For the runner the trails around the top of the horse are great fun and the 33-mile Imber trail also passes here. There are nice loops from the car park above the horse or from nearby Westbury.

Edington Priory was founded in 1351 by the then Bishop of Winchester, William Edington. The priory church was consecrated in 1361 and today is the parish church of Saint Mary, Saint Katharine and All Saints. Grade 1 listed, the building is a good example of the transition between the decorated and perpendicular style of church architecture.

Steeple Ashton is a stunning Wiltshire village that looks like it's wandered right out of a book. With magnificent, historical buildings and an impressive church, the village is well worth exploring if you're nearby. After gaining a Royal charter to hold a weekly market in 1266, the village's prospects flourished, allowing the construction of one of the county's largest churches.

There are over 1,200 hillforts in England, most of which occupy fantastic viewpoints and Bratton Camp hillfort is no different. In fact, it has a truly extraordinary vistas from its earthen ramparts. The camp sits just on the ridge between Westbury and Bratton, and immediately above the Westbury White Horse. There's a long barrow within the castle's fortifications estimated to be around 5,000 years old.

Nice farm shop, with a good selection of sweet and savoury food and plenty of outdoor space, perfect to stop while cycling. Personal recommendation: Mushroom and chicken pie or Mac and cheese pie + Lemon Sorbet

Just off Westbury road next to the layby you'll find a little gravel track that shoots you straight up. After a few hundred metres you'll need to hop off to get through a gate. Once you're passed that it's a bit more of the steep gradient but as the trees thin out the gradient eases and it'll curve you round a steep drop to a gate at the very top. There's also a lovely view at the top with a bench for a rest if you need it! If you're lucky you'll see a light aircraft taking off/landing once you get to the top at the airfield
