Jim Martin
9월 6, 2025, St Trillo's Chapel

"This fascinating building is thought to be the smallest church in the British Isles, seating only 6 people. It is named after St. Trillo, a 6th century Celtic saint who built his cell here. The age of the present building is not known, as it has been heavily repaired over the centuries. St. Trillo’s original cell is more likely to have been made of wood and wattle, although he may have built a wall of stones gathered from the beach to protect it from the wind." Rhos on Sea is described as neat, pristine and peaceful. There is a long seaside promenade and great views.

Here, on the way up to Mynydd Isaf on the footpath through Happy Valley, you will hit a series of steep steps that take you to the upper reaches of the Great Orme. It is a nice walk with good views over towards Llandudno and its pier at several points. The top of Mynydd Isaf is a nice place to sit for a while to have a break, as even though it is not that high, it is a good workout to get to this vantage point.

Trig point on top of the little orme. Gives panoramic views of the Irish sea, Snowdonia, Conwy, Denbighshire, Llandudno and the Great Orme.

The Little Orme (Welsh: Rhiwledyn, also known as Trwyn y Fuwch, Trwyn y Gogarth and Y Gogarth Fach) is 141 metres (463 ft) in height, and is a HuMP (having a minimum Hundred Metre Prominence). It is one of two headlands situated at either end of Llandudno Bay, in Conwy County Borough, Wales. The other, larger, headland is the Great Orme. It has two summits, the higher with a trig point. The cliffs are a popular challenge for highly experienced rock climbers. The Coast Guard Rescue Unit use the Little Orme for training. Otherwise, it is a popular sightseeing location and walking/hiking site. The Little Orme was inhabited during the Mesolithic and Neolithic eras, notably the Pant y Wennol cave. A small hoard of Iron Age Celtic metalwork was found in a cave on the Little Orme. The medieval chapel of Blessed Mary of Penrhyn, abandoned in 1930 and now in ruins, is at the foot of the Little Orme in the grounds of Penrhyn Hall at Penrhyn Bay. On 14 April 1587, printing material for Catholic literature was found in a cave on the Little Orme, where it had been used by the recusant Robert Pugh (squire of Penrhyn Hall) and his Chaplain Father William Davies to print Y Drych Cristianogawl (The Christian Mirror), the first book to be printed in Wales. They had taken refuge there during the persecution of Catholics instigated by Queen Elizabeth I in May 1586. The Royal Artillery coastal gunnery school, 198 battery, was posted to Little Orme during the Second World War. Target practice was undertaken from the headland to anchored boats, and unspent ammunition and unexploded shells may still be encountered offshore. Gun emplacements and ancillary buildings were in situ until at least the early 1960s, but the site has since been 'landscaped'.

Rhos-on-Sea (Welsh: Llandrillo-yn-Rhos) is a seaside resort and community in Conwy County Borough, Wales. The population was 7,593 at the 2011 census. It adjoins Colwyn Bay and is named after the Welsh kingdom of Rhos established there in late Roman Britain as a sub-kingdom of Gwynedd. It's where I call home when i'm not away working. It is surrounded by many of my favourite hiking places, The little orme, great orme and Bryn Euryn and Llys Euryn. Madog and claims for the discovery of America - According to legend, Madog ap Owain Gwynedd, a Welsh prince of Gwynedd, sailed from here in 1170 and discovered America, over three hundred years before Christopher Columbus's famous voyage in 1492. This event was recorded by a plaque on one of the properties on the sea-front. This property was called "Odstone" at no. 179, Marine Drive which, as of June 2012, had become neglected. It was demolished as of September 2017. David Jones and Rhos - The poet and visual artist David Jones visited Rhos-on-Sea in 1904 when he was 9. It was his first ever trip to Wales and it made an enormous impression on him. His father's family lived in Rhos, and the young Jones played with his cousins at St. Trillo's Chapel, and on Bryn Euryn. He also particularly loved the fishing weir just a few yards from St. Trillos. These were formative influences both on his writing and visual art. He wrote that this visit left 'an indelible mark on my soul'. In 1937, after the death of his mother, Jones revisited Rhos. He found it a 'wilderness of villas and bungalows'. The fishing weir had gone (there remain a few stumps), and the chapel was now 'cleared and cared for', but it had 'lost half its numinous feeling' Harold Lowe 5th officer of Titanic, is buried at Llandrillo-yn-Rhos churchyard

Idyllic settings on a nice sunny weathers day. Rhos On Sea harbour is small but worthy of stopping to admire the view

Trwyn Y Fuwch has a very large rock formation of hills, these stick out considerably as you ride along the flat promenade. When you get close to then you realise the size
