Hollie Berrie is a good place for refreshments on the route at Scarva

The small town of Scarva, nestled between green meadows and the quiet canal, offers a welcome break on my bike tour through Northern Ireland. Here you cycle on well-maintained paths past historic bridges and small villages that give you the feeling that time has stood still. The British flags fluttering along the side of the road remind you that you are in a culturally special area - a detail that reflects the identity of the region. The route is easy to cycle, the surrounding landscape is gently rolling, which makes for pleasant cycling. The view of wide fields and rolling hills invites you to slow down now and then and take in the peace and quiet. A special feature of Scarva is the annual Orange Order March, which transforms the village into a kind of open-air stage once a year and keeps the traditions of this region alive.

There is something enchanted about this old, dilapidated stone hut - as if it were whispering stories of times gone by, when the canal was still full of life and the lock keepers worked here day and night. The walls, overgrown with greenery and moss, show how nature is slowly reclaiming its place. The building itself is only a ruin, but that is precisely what makes it somehow interesting. The mixture of broken brickwork and wild growth has something melancholic about it that fits perfectly into the tranquility of the surroundings. Right next to it there is a small rest area with a bench - ideal for stopping for a moment and taking in the atmosphere.

A stroll along the Newry Ship Canal is like a relaxing trip into the maritime history of this city. The gentle rippling of the water accompanies you as you walk along the promenade. The old shipping canal runs through the city and is now a peaceful place where nature and urban life meet. On the banks you can stroll past trees that provide you with shade and feel the light breeze blowing over the water. The historical significance of the canal is still palpable - it used to be an important trade route, but today it invites you to linger. The water features in the middle of the canal in particular provide a refreshing change and bring life to the quiet surroundings. The waterfront promenade offers a wonderful view of the mix of old buildings and modern artwork. If you feel like taking a little break, you are sure to find a nice place to relax and observe.

Nestled away in the lovely Loughbrickland Forest lies a bronze age ringfort or rath. With its peaceful location surrounded by trees Coolnacran Fort has an almost mystical feel. In spring bluebells carpet the area, and you can explore the interior of the fort. The Forest also has designated walking routes throughout.

Scarva (from Irish: Scarbhach meaning "shallow place, rough ford" is a small village in the parish of Aghaderg, County Down, Scarva is known as the location of the "Sham Fight" Pageant on 13 July every year. The Pageant attracts thousands of members of the Royal Black Preceptory, who come to act out a symbolic dramatised re-enactment of the Battle of the Boyne.

Village on the Newry cycle path. There is also a Scarva pilbox - one of many left over from the 2nd World War. Worth seeking out if you've got the time.
