Nice spot to stop for a brake

Goram in legend was a giant who fought with his brother Vincent for the attentions of Avona. There are many old names around Bristol that relate to this story and features that depict where one of the giants sat, stamped, dug a trench to allow the river Avon to flow or died. Here is Goram's soap dish.

The large village of Almondsbury is split in two by Almondsbury Hill, which gives superb views across the Severn and its iconic bridges. To the north is picturesque Lower Almondsbury, where you'll find St Mary's Church and the rustic Bowl Inn. The upper part of the village is more modern and also has a pub: the Swan Inn.

Standing proud on Castle Hill and visible above the trees for miles around is Blaise Castle. This 18th-century, Gothic Revival style folly was built by Robert Mylne and it became a popular attraction on the Blaise Castle Estate. From its turrets, much of Bristol can be seen, as well as Avonmouth and the Avon Gorge. Any run to Blaise Castle involves a little bit of legwork to get up the hill. However, you are amply rewarded with fun descents down towards Hazel Brook at the bottom of Henbury Gorge.

Stunningly beautiful in autumn and I imagine lovely and shaded in the summer. Lots of human (and dog) traffic to negotiate, so it's definitely not a speed run.

Blaise Museum is housed within a 19th-century mansion. Inside, you can observe a social history collection and discover everyday objects from times gone by, including model trains, dolls, toys, period costume, Victorian toilets and baths, and kitchen and laundry equipment. The museum is free to enter.

Definitely the scenic route to go through this area, but take it slow as there are lots of dog walkers and families on the path. Go slow and enjoy the views

The Bowl is a traditional pub and inn tucked away in the village of Almondsbury, near Bristol. Expect thick stone walls, rustic beams and open fires ready to roar in the winter, and sunny patios for the warmer months, with 12 cosy ensuite bedrooms that will feel like home from home. Very nice old British pub. Perfect if you stay there over night. The rooms are very nice, good and snuggly. The beer and food are the best.
