There are three pubs in Sutton Courtney, which is the half way point on the walk, to take a break for refreshments. We had an excellent coffee at the Fish.

The riverside walk is diverted (July2024) as the bridge is dodgy - the diversion takes you over the old Bridge - which is nice!

Take a seat in Marina Park next to Abingdon Marina and have a bite to eat whilst watch the boats come and go. Perfect spot for a dog walk, paddleboard, or picnic.

Lovely section of the River Thames behind Sutton Pools. You'll come across many idyllic houses perched on the riverbanks as well as a number of canal boats, one of them of which is a canal boat converted café serving up delicious hot drinks and cakes on Saturdays and Sundays.

This half-hidden footbridge offers an absolutely fantastic view down the River Thames in both directions. Appearing suddenly on the footpath, it spans the Back Water cut between two sections of the river. You can just about see Abingdon if you look north along the water.

Lying in the quiet churchyard of Sutton Courteney, George Orwell's grave brings visitors from all over the world. The masterful British writer changed the literary world with his novels and the Orwell Society make an annual pilgrimage to his grave each year on the Sunday nearest his birthday (25 June). It's certainly worth nothing that his grave is marked with his real name: Eric Arthur Blair.
