Rocky and a bit rooty

A quite unique seat, a lovely place to stop for lunch or to admire the view of Crich Stand and the Derwent Valley.

Not sure if I just got a bit lost here but some of the paths are definitely more suited to MTB. Doable on a gravel bike though with some challenging off road climbs. Lovely area to cycle round but a mountain bike is needed to make the most of the fun. Prepare to get off and push close to the top of the woods - the "path" shares its route with a small stream!

In the serene Amber Valley region of Derbyshire, Alderwasley is a beautiful base for exploring the surrounding countryside, with the southern reaches of the Peak District National Park only a stone's throw away. Nearby Shining Cliff Wood is a magnificent place to roam and you're unlikely to meet many others. The Boar Inn serves good pub food and offers B&B rooms. There are also a couple of delightful cottages that you can hire.

Shining Cliff Wood is an ancient woodland that was once a part of the Duffied Frith royal hunting forest. Today it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Hikers can enjoy the circular waymarked trail that visits a yew tree, named Betty Kenny Tree, that some say is 2,000 years old. The cliff after which the wood is named is a low gritstone rockface. A hostel that was once owned by the Youth Hostels Association but is now a privately owned residential centre resides beneath the rockface.
