There’s a rock fall just beyond here if you’re heading NW - they have closed the bridleway but there are no signs before the last opportunity to take a detour - i have added pictures of the signs with all the information. I took a detour on bicycle through Brassington. Hopefully the trail should be open by March 6th 2026.

An active limestone quarry, this area is known for producing specimens of dark blue fluorite, baryte, anglesite, cerussite, malachite and smithsonite.

The church dates from the 13th century. In time it was filled with galleries and the chancel and tower were cut off from the rest of the church by screens of lath and plaster. This was all stripped out during a restoration between 1862 and 1863 by Ewan Christian which cost £1,550 (equivalent to £187,330 in 2023).

By the 1870s Hopton Incline's winding engine had given 40 years' service and was life-expired. During that time locomotive power had improved, in 1877 Hopton incline's chains and engines were removed, after which the incline became a conventional adhesion railway; trains ascended the bank under their own power and descended using their own brakes.
