This stone circle from the Bronze Age, built thousands of years before the beginning of the Christian era, is neither as large nor nearly as famous as the legendary "Stonehenge" on the plains near Amesbury (which is, after all, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; if you're interested, see =>> https://www.komoot.com/de-de/highlight/960007 ), but this one can be visited without much tourist hustle and bustle, and it also has a much more interesting-sounding name...

Carving on the vertical flat face of a rock alongside a carriage drive. The carving shows a coronet above the letter Y, with the date 1826 below. The carving marks the boundary between land then owned by the Duke of Rutland and Mr Thornhill of Stanton Hall. https://wikishire.co.uk/wiki/Stanton_Moor https://her.derbyshire.gov.uk/Monument/MDR8536

The shaft was named after Mr.Tinker, who first sunk it back in the 1600s. It is one of many family shafts built on Masson Hill, a trend at the time to assert certain mining territory. For hundreds of years, the land on Masson Hill was used predominantly by miners who hoped to earn a living by extracting lead from the hillside. In turn, they ended up fashioning a huge network of tunnels and mine shafts. This created a unique landscape and habitat, which has since been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (an SSSI). The SSSI is also home to a rare species of wild orchid.

Bonsall applied for a market charter in the 1600s but this was refused. Nevertheless an impressive market cross was erected. The cross shaft is mounted on a base which stands on top of a set of concentric steps numbering from eleven to fifteen due to the sloping road. It is thought the cross shaft may date from the 14th or 15th century. In 1678 this was topped with a stone ball carved with faces. In 1870 the shaft was restored, paid for by the Prince family of Bonsall.”

A 2002 replica of the medieval carving of a lead miner, which may date back to the Saxon period, and now resides in St Mary’s Church in Wirksworth but originally came from Bonsall. In the legends of Northern Derbyshire, ‘T’Owd Man’ is recognised as a spirit figure that inhabits mines and caverns - hence the carving is named ‘T’Owd Man of Bonsall’. For up to 1,000 years, the T’Owd Man remained unrecorded until St James’ Church was renovated and extended in 1863. It was relocated to Wirksworth in the 1870s.
