A masterpiece of hydraulic engineering The cistern, dating back to the Byzantine period, is a masterpiece of hydraulic engineering. Built with centuries-old craftsmanship, it served to ensure a water supply for the inhabitants of the hilltop fortress. Inside, water was collected and stored, ensuring the survival of the population even during long sieges. Visiting the cistern today is like stepping back in time, admiring an imposing structure that reflects the profound understanding of ancient engineers. The cistern's charm lies not only in its function, but also in its architecture. Its brick vaults and stone walls, bathed in a cool and mysterious gloom, create an evocative atmosphere that completely envelops you. The silence of the place, broken only by the trickling of water, invites contemplation and reflection on the vital role this structure played in the history of Berat. A treasure to be discovered Today, the Ancient Cistern is a tourist attraction, a point of interest for those who want to venture off the beaten path. It is located within the walls of Berat Castle, making it easily accessible for those exploring the fortress. The visit doesn't take long, but it will leave an unforgettable memory. If you're a history or architecture enthusiast, or simply love discovering hidden treasures, you can't miss this place. The Ancient Cistern of Berat is an experience that connects you with the past, with the strength and ingenuity of a people who built a city in harmony with nature and history.

Beautiful city of 1,000 windows. If you hike up the hill on the opposite side of the river and visit the castle ruins, you'll have a great view of the old town of Berat.

Today it is no longer possible to reach the waterfalls from the start of the trail (one area is prohibited). The waterfall is only accessible by going and returning from the end of the trail.

Berat Castle is not simply a ruin or a fortress like so many other sights of this kind. On the contrary, it is still home to a dedicated district of Berat, known in Albanian as Kalaja. The mountain was already inhabited and fortified in ancient times. Over the centuries, Berat Castle has been repeatedly remodeled or rebuilt. Its last major renovation was probably in the 13th century under Ottoman rule. It was during this period that the fortifications, of which the surrounding wall is still completely preserved, and the present-day city district within the walls, were built.

Berat is worth a visit, but you'll have seen everything in two days. You can still sign up for a cooking course €35- in the Castle or take a canyon tour along the Osum €60,- so just google it. Advice, walk, wear sturdy walking shoes. The paths are steep and paved with round stones, cobblestones unevenly. There is a lot of history from the partisan period and the independence from communism. This is the case throughout Albania. People are helpful and friendly. Prices are still low except now in highly touristic places like Gjirokaster and Sarandë the prices are rising. Paying with euros is fine. The currency is lek (derived from Alexander the Great). 100 lek is equal to 1 euro. Take enough euros with you and when paying ask for leks back. Pay attention to the correct exchange rate. Pinning is expensive in costs. You are not allowed to export leks. Coffee costs about 80/100 lek just like a scoop of ice cream. Detail lots of litter lying around. Have fun, enjoy the culture and history.
