The pretty village of North Pickenham lies on the route of the Peddars Way long-distance trail. The impressive St Andrew's Church is worth a look, while the nearby Grade I listed St Mary's Church has murals that date back to the 11th century. St Mary's is a remnant of the deserted medieval village of Houghton on the Hill.

Wittles Cafe next door is probably a better bet for a mid-ride stop.

The amazing Castle Acre, mainly prodigious lumps and bumps now but you can get a real feel for the sheer scale of the place how it must projected power and authority for Normans to their sometimes rebellious Saxon subjects.

The fantastic bailey gate here reminds me of a similar specimen I saw in Belgium at Veurne. Not far from here is the Red Lion Hostel which is run by a 90 year old lady called Alison, wonderful place to stay if you get the chance.

Excellent cafe/tearoom, for eat in or takeaway on the benches outside the front or opposite on the green. Open 10am-3.30pm every day in spring/summer (kitchen closes 2.30pm), less in winter.

Best view of the impressive earthworks and remaining walls of the ruined castle.

Superb former small medieval town, now just a village, but with scenic streets and buildings, a medieval gatehouse, castle and priory (all now ruined), as well as a very nice cafe and pub.

Visited this cafe. Nice food and people.

On a Saturday around 15:45, I was told that it in fact was the only place open selling drinks, snacks, and the like.

If you are coming from South Acre heading up to High Street, you need to pass through the gate to get to the castle ruins. I missed them on my direct route to the Peddar's Way (northbound).

Fantastic cake and coffee with really friendly service. Castle Acre is the first viable pitstop along the Peddars Way after leaving Thetford/ Knettishall Heath.

Village with a lovey green with benches alongside the ponds, a village shop and pub, nice rest stop.

Shaded ford with nice clear water with a good footbridge alternative, but was ridable (at least in April). The trails either side are also pleasant, only a few slippery muddy patches.

This fantastically well preserved motte and bailey castle is free to enter and explore. It was built shortly after the Norman Conquest in the 11th century by the first William de Warenne, a close associate of William the Conqueror.

Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse is home to the Museum of Norfolk Life, a rare breeds farm and a recreated workhouse. At the farm you can see the very rare Suffolk Punch Horse, a traditional working horse dating of which there are estimated to be only 400 in existence. As there's not an awful lot on The Peddars Way, Castle Acre Post Office makes a good stock up stop. There's also a fish and chip shop next door.
