Situated between Burrough on the Hill and Somerby, south of Melton Mowbray, Burrough Hill Country Park is a significant and well-preserved Iron Age hill fort. Besides its historical importance, the park provides diverse wildlife habitats and various areas for visitors. Once known for foxhunting and as the reputed birthplace of Stilton cheese, the area has transformed into a mix of arable, dairy, beef, and sheep farming today.

Burrough Hill - Iron Age hillfort in Burrough on the Hill, 7 miles south of Melton Mowbray. Situated on a promontory about 210 metres (690 ft) above sea level, the site commands views over the surrounding countryside for miles around.

Built of ironstone with limestone dressings and dates from c1300, from which period only the arcade with alternating octagonal and circular piers and double-chamfered arches remain.

Bring some pennies as this is a lovely little Visitor Centre with some hot food and drinks to snack on after your walk.

Melton Country Park offers 140 acres of open green space with wildlife lakes, footpaths trails, dog agility trails, gym equipment, children's play areas, football pitches, and a visitors centre with a cafe. Cycling is permitted on the trails.

Burrough Hill (210m) commands views over the surrounding countryside for miles around. A great place for a hill fort as discovered back in the early Iron age.

Note: The nice little independent Cafe Allez has now been replaced by the castle run coffee shop so they could cut out the people who built it up from nothing. Up to you if you want to give them your business.

Beautiful wooded area with lots of wildlife - birds, muntjack deer, lovely trees.

A great place to stop and have a picnic, just a short walk from the car park, with extensive views of the surroundings There's a toposcope to help identify things. The grassy area inside the earthbanks is an ideal safe area for children to play and work off their energy.

Grimston is a quintessential English village, with a pretty church, a traditional pub and a village green that still includes stocks. The 13th-century St John the Baptist church is Grade II-listed, having been restored in 1856. The Black Horse pub has been serving the village for 400 years. Expect a friendly welcome and good food.

Good cafe but opening hours are not really cycling friendly. Only opens at 11am on a Sunday.
