Beautiful area fairly steep path climb up, but well worth it and rewarding

Set in a wooded valley in the heart of Dartmoor, Fernworthy supplies fresh drinking water to the towns and cities around the moor. The sloping, open grassland to the south of the water is a fantastic viewpoint and a great place from which to spot wildlife.

So if you're in the area and willing to pay the entrance fee, then you can take a look. If you don't see it, you're not missing much. It's really just a small area that's well worth seeing. But I have to be fair ☝️... ... the circular trail was closed because of a landslide. So we're missing half of the trail. Maybe the other half would have changed our minds. For people who spend a lot of time in nature, it's OK, nothing more. I hope I'm not lynched here now 😬🙈. There's really beautiful nature in Dartmoor and it's free too 😉.

Warning! Apparently there was a landslide, so the path along the river is closed. You can only get to the waterfall through the National Trust area. Entry fee is £11 per person! It's no longer a quiet place. Children play right by the waterfall, so you can't take any nice photos. It's a real shame! We would have liked to have known this before the hike. Then we definitely wouldn't have done it!!!

Here the hiker passes an ancient wayside cross made of granite. This small, sacred monument does not impress with a special or even striking design. There are miles of wide, rolling and generally quite smooth fire roads in Bellever Forest to explore. These are bordered by mossy green banks and evergreen plantations, so good for mushroom hunting in the autumn! If you're planning a short walk, you can find good facilities nearby in Postbridge at the Dartmoor National Park Visitor Centre, including parking, toilets, a shop and water refills. There's also a Forestry Commission car park in Bellever.

If you're following the Bellever Miles Without Stiles tramper route, this is the singletrack section of the trail. It also makes up part of the Lych Way, an ancient route which parishioners would take to reach their local church for burials and other services, sometimes travelling up to 12 miles (19 km) over rough moorland.

The Dartmoor National Park Visitor Centre is a great hub to start a walk from, or visit mid-hike. There is a car park, public toilets and shop here, stocked with everything from maps to locally produced crafts, as well as a water refill station and lovely, friendly staff. There's also an exhibition with lots to learn for all ages. Shortly after crossing the bridge, we had to return. There is a public footpath, but it's only accessible via a wooden construction with two steep steps. We were walking with our two 80 pounds dogs; the steps are not accessible for dogs and we could only have continued if we had lifted them both above this whatever-it-is-called thingy.

Excellent pizza and undercover, outdoor seating at the Castle Inn! No issues taking our bikes into the garden.

The adventurous path through the gorge, past the White LaDy waterfall, the Tunnel Falls and the Devils Couldron is always worth it!
