Campsite at the back of the pub. Great if your touring/bikepacking. Good shower block

Lovely place to sit and watch the wildlife. I've spent some time reading my book here and saw a kingfisher a couple of times.

Running through prom makes a nice stop on a route. It can be quite busy in the summer though.

Osea Island is a relatively unknown Essex retreat in the Blackwater Estuary with private beaches, no shops or restaurants and mainly self catering accommodation.

You can see oyster frames out to see at lowe tide, would have been good to see it in action.

There are 10 Tiptree Tearooms around the Essex countryside. This one has a wonderful view!

Small, friendly, independent cafe with a few indoor tables as well as a couple on the street. Open 9.00-4.00 every day serving sandwiches, toasties, wraps, bagels etc. as well as cake and coffee.

The parish church in the village of Steeple doesn't have a tower, it has...you guessed it...a steeple.

Perfect for a coffee or lunch stop literally overlooking the water. Busy at peak times.

Gives views of the old quay of Burnham and the estuary of the River Crouch across towards Wallasea Island.

Great location by the sea lock where the Blackwater Navigation meets the estuary, looking across to Northey Island.

good way to complete a circuit across the River Crouch - a little expensive but something a bit different. £5 per adult and £2 per bicycle. Chap who runs it is lovely. You ring his mobile and he comes to get you. You get the ferry from the Harbourmaster's office. See Burnham ferry website for details

Can be muddy in winter when walking to the further falls

Right at the end of the Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation sits Heybridge Basin. Home of the sea lock which releases the canal out to sea. The basin meant that sea vessels could enter the canal and travel all the way up to Chelmsford. There are two pubs here, the Jolly Sailor and the Old Ship, plus the Lock Tea Room if you are in need of a pitstop.

Backed by a caravan park, Mill Beach has stunning views over the estuary and the unique beach huts on stilts. The Osea View Cafe on the beach makes a great waterfront stop on any hike.

A tidal causeway known as The Stumble connects Osea Island with the mainland. Sadly the island isn't open to the public but you can visit by staying in the island's hotel. It was used in the 2012 film 'The Woman in Black' as the 'Nine Lives Causeway'. It is popular with musicians looking for a remote recording venue. Rhianna is said to have recorded an album there in 2019.
