It's beautiful

The European long-distance hiking trail E7 runs through Andorra under the designation GR7. The route through Andorra is just over 40 km long, coming from France at 2,521 m over the Portella Blanca mountain pass across the principality to Catalonia (Farga de Moles at 850 m). The first part of the hiking trail leads through the Grau Roig ski resort and the Pessons valley.

The Estany d'Engolasters is not only a place of natural interest, but also plays an important role in the industrial history of Andorra. At the beginning of the 20th century, a water catchment system was built to harness the lake for hydroelectric power production. The lake has a surface area of about 7 hectares and a maximum depth of about 16 metres. Its altitude is approximately 1,616 metres above sea level, this lake of glacial origin.

It is a relatively small lake, but its mountainous surroundings and altitude give it a special charm. The lake is fed by melted snow and springs from the surrounding mountains, providing it with crystal-clear, cold water all year round.

During World War II, the Pyrenees were an escape route for those fleeing the Nazi occupation of France. The Estany de les Abelletes and its surroundings served as a temporary refuge for fugitives crossing the mountains towards Andorra, a neutral country during the conflict.

The unnamed lakes in this part of the walk are the so-called "Estanys de la Solana" (this is the Catalan term for mountainous terrain that faces south and therefore receives more sun than other slopes).
