Marcel Marlier was born in Herseaux, a district of Mouscron. He studied at the Saint-Luc School in Tournai, where he later became a teacher. After winning an illustration competition, he began his career as an illustrator of children's books. In 1954, he and Gilbert Delahaye launched the "Tiny" children's book series, published by Casterman. The first book was titled "Tiny on the Farm," and more than fifty years later, the sixtieth book was published. Marlier died in 2011 at the age of 80 from cancer. On September 29, 2015, the museum "Centre Marcel-Marlier, dessine-moi Martine" opened here. Source: Wikipedia

The Castle of the Counts is the only example of monumental civil architecture from before the 19th century in Mouscron. Four great families of Seigneurs succeeded one another here over six centuries. Today, on this vast estate, you can still admire the Tournai-style castle, as well as a farmyard surrounded by the remains of outbuildings from the 16th and 17th centuries, and a site surrounded by moats. A self-guided walk around the moats offers you the opportunity to explore the entire estate. Two major historical events have left a lasting mark on local tradition and folklore: the visit of Charles V, who spent the night in the castle, and the atrocities of the famous Hurlus, followers of Luther (during the Wars of Religion) who pillaged the region, occupied the castle for three months, and stole its furnishings. Passage under the railway, for pedestrians and cyclists only. Note: above the arch, the year 1920 is indicated on one side of the tunnel; on the other side, 1919.

Looks like well maintained, let's hope it keep on going. It was very humid today, yet not slippery.

Young trees have been planted along the former railway line. Each tree represents a recently born child... an alternative to the birth forests that most municipalities have created over the past two decades.

Line 85, Roubaix-Wattrelos-Herseaux, used to run here, continuing to Dottignies-Espierres-Avelgem and Leupegem (Oudenaarde) with a total length of 33.8 km. The Roubaix-Herseaux line was inaugurated on July 3, 1893, to ensure the mobility of workers coming from Flanders to work in industries in northern France. However, from 1914 onward, this line was used less and less in favor of the Wattrelos-Herseaux electric tram line. The line was closed to passenger traffic in 1932 and to freight traffic in 1950. It was completely dismantled in 1954. Line 85, Avelgem-Herseaux, was constructed in 1860. In Avelgem, the line connected with line 83, which led to Kortrijk, and line 87 to Lessines. The last train ran on line 85 in 1959. For almost a century, these lines served to transport cross-border commuters and seasonal workers from Flanders who, during the Depression of the mid-19th century, sought work in the carriage factories of Northern France or Hainaut. Line 85 had only one track, but a small marshalling yard with equipment for loading and unloading wagons was built just before Espierres station. With the rise of the car, freight transport, and the closure of the carriage factories in Hainaut, the railway lines became less detailed. Source: information board on site

An information board on site explains that this Chapel of Our Lady, in its current state, dates from the 18th century. It has an original, curved pediment. Inside stands a statue of the Madonna and Child. A centuries-old linden tree once sheltered the chapel, but this tree collapsed in 1971 after a storm.
