The small chapel is a remnant of an earlier settlement in the Weißenbachtal, which was inhabited until 1960. The chapel was built in 1928, when a hammer mill opened on this site. After the mill closed, the settlement disappeared.

The origin of the annual pilgrimage on the Sunday after Matthew is to be found in the fact that a badly wounded crusader came from Altenmarkt and fell asleep by the spring. In a dream he was instructed to wash himself with the water from the spring. He did, was healed, and smeared the wooden cross with his blood as a thank you. Others report that this crusader saw a wounded mouse drag itself to the water, dove in, and, apparently healed, quickly ran away. The time of the pilgrimage, the day of the Apostle Matthew, came from the fact that in ancient times, on September 21, even the inmates of public hospitals received an additional bath and were led to church together. So the name of St. Matthew with bathing and washing to health. Believers from the Garstnertal, Laussa, Altenmarkt and St. Gallen went to the Heilbründl on the Hengstpass on that day, washed their eyes, drank the health water and often took a bottle home with them.
