1월 9, 2026, View of Llyn Idwal
Llyn Idwal is a stunning glacial lake nestled in the Glyderau mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia), North Wales. Designated as Wales’ first National Nature Reserve, its dramatic landscape was famously studied by Charles Darwin to prove glacial action. Legend says the lake is named after a drowned prince and that birds refuse to fly over its crystal-clear waters.

Idwal Gorge is a dramatic, steep-sided ravine located above Llyn Idwal in Eryri (Snowdonia). Known for the Idwal Staircase, it offers a challenging "Grade 2" scramble through mossy, water-worn rock and hidden cascades. In winter, it is a premier destination for ice climbers. Carved by glacial meltwater, this rugged cleft provides a raw encounter with the powerful geological forces that sculpted the iconic Ogwen Valley landscape.

The visitor centre is located on the A5, approximately 5 miles south of Bethesda and approximately 4 miles west of Capel Curig, on the western side of Llyn Ogwen. There are a number of facilities including toilets, disabled toilets, an information room, public wifi and a small kiosk selling hot and cold snacks. From the visitor centre you can start a range of walks and climbs in the area. The most popular is the walk to Wales' first ever national nature reserve, the beautiful Cwm Idwal, a glacial lake with a mountainous backdrop. (Cwm Idwal National Nature Reserve)

After the rather rocky and steep climb, you are rewarded with a great view. From here you can decide whether you want to climb further up to the Devil's Kitchen or whether you want to hike back down to the lake on the other side.

This is classed as 'Easy – Access for All' route. This means that the route is suitable for people of all abilities, including those with conventional wheelchairs and pushchairs. It can get busy depending on time of the day. I prefer to go really early, just around sunrise as can sit in peace at the waterfall without distraction of people

A circular walk through the historical Nannau estate and along the shore of Llyn Cynwch The Precipice has a fantastic array of qualities. From habitats such as woodlands and meadows to captivating views of Snowdonia’s mountain ranges. The path will take you through part of the Nannau estate which dates back to the 12th century and is steeped in fascinating Welsh history. The route ends on the shores of Llyn Cynwch—a working reservoir that provides nearby Dolgellau with water.

9월 23, 2023, Precipice Walk
Precipice Walk is one of the most popular walks in southern Snowdonia, located approximately three miles north of Dolgellau. The walk ranges between 220 and 250 meters above sea level and offers panoramic views of the Mawddach River below and beyond towards the northern mountains. The walk starts at a spacious parking lot and, except for a few places, is relatively flat everywhere. However, the route is somewhat narrow and uneven in places and is not recommended for people with a fear of heights. (DOLGELLAU.uk)

Llyn Cynwch acts as both a 'prequel' and 'sequel' to the Precipice Walk, one of the most famous and popular walks in the area with breathtaking views. You'll get a glimpse of the lake if you take the route counterclockwise and you'll see it in all its glory if you finish the walk with a nice, steady stroll along the banks. Together with the Precipice Walk it is part of the historic Nannau estate and is a working water basin that has supplied drinking water for Dolgellau since 1968. Because it is a water basin, swimming is not allowed. (DOLGELLAU.uk)
