From Hafnarstræti, next to the Hotel KEA, a staircase leads up to the Evangelical Lutheran Akureyrarkirkja (Akureyri Church), whose twin towers overlook the city and are one of Akureyri's landmarks. The light concrete church was designed by the Icelandic architect Guðjón Samuélsson and consecrated in 1940. The exterior of the building is intended to reflect the rocky landscape of Eyjafjörður. The interior is relatively simple. Particularly noteworthy are the central windows of the choir and the organ with its 3,290 pipes, made in Germany in 1961.
