St. Nicolai Church bears the name of the sailors' saint, St. Nicolaus. It is West Lolland's largest church. The current appearance of the church dates from 1653. The beautiful altarpiece is by Anders Mortensen. The baptismal font is made of white marble. Nakskov Church (Danish: Sankt Nikolai Kirke) is the largest church in Nakskov on the west coast of the Danish island of Lolland. As Nakskov was mentioned in Valdemar's census book in the 13th century, the church probably dates from the same period. Remains of a wooden church dating from c. 1000 were excavated in the 1950s. It was replaced by a brick church dedicated to Saint Nicholas, first mentioned in 1398, although the oldest sections probably date from the early 13th century. It was completed in the second half of the 17th century. Major repairs were made in 1746, but further work proved necessary in 1825. Before the Danish Reformation, the church had a number of chapels and altars, each associated with the town's craft guilds. Much of the documentation was destroyed when the Lübeckers sacked Nakskov in 1510. The original choir and nave were built in Romanesque style in light red brick. Parts of it are preserved in the Gothic additions from the first half of the 15th century. Major extensions were added to both the east and west, resulting in aisles on either side of the nave that effectively encapsulated the older construction. At the beginning of the 15th century a large tower was built at the western end of the former nave. In the middle of the 17th century, after around 200 years, Gothic extensions were completed without further construction work. The Romanesque chancel was demolished while rectangular arches were added to the former walls. A sweet little town at the end of the "monastery rod" long-distance on Lolland. Above the roofs of the village towers the church tower of St. Nicholas. The small alleyways of the sleepy nest have a very special charm!
