On November 12, 2003, a suicide attack on the barracks of Italian Carabinieri troops in Iraq left 28 dead and more than 100 injured. It was the most costly military incident for Italy since World War II. The victims are remembered here.

One of the town's many churches. I'm not a fan of sacred architecture and believe the resources would be better used for humankind elsewhere. But here in Italy, a town square without a church is unimaginable.

After leaving the raging traffic of Catania behind, Nicolosi is the first town to reach and the town is very sizeable. As usual around the Etna, the main street is paved with black and quite rough lava planks. If the bottles have already been empty, here is another great opportunity to fill them, if you want to continue towards Refugio Sapienza - on the lava fields you will search for springs and wells in vain.
