At the foot of the castle, this small expanse of water adds to the charm of Pierrefonds.

The Etang du Buissonnet is one of the largest ponds in the region. Bordered by the old railway line, you can enjoy views of the water and wildlife.

If you are looking for a nice and easy hike in the Compiègne forest, you can follow in the footsteps of the empresses who resided in the royal and imperial palace. The “In the footsteps of the empresses” trail is a 6.6 km loop which leaves from the Maison Forestière de la Grille des Beaux-Monts and takes you through historical and natural sites, such as the Grand Parc, the belvedere of the Beaux-Monts and the Hameau de la Reine. You will be able to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the forest and learn about the lives and legacies of the women who shaped the history of France.

What a powerful facility! No wonder Napoleon III set up his private residence here. Violet le Duc expanded the medieval fortress into a magnificent castle and if you want to experience it on film, you can see it in "The Man with the Iron Mask" (Leonardo the Caprio). Very worthwhile, and of course surrounded by crowds of tourists.
