The Lethe is a 36.5 km long left tributary of the Hunte River in northwestern Lower Saxony. The name Lethe originates from "Lith," a local term for a high, wooded riverbank. The Lethe has two sources in the moor near Halen in the southern Oldenburg municipality of Emstek. From there, it flows through Gut Lethe[5] – past the Lethe quarry lake – and continues north through the municipalities of Garrel, Großenkneten, and Wardenburg to Oldenburg. The river originated in the postglacial period; it supplies the Ahlhorn fish ponds with water and, after 36.5 km, flows into the Hunte River via the Osternburger Canal near Oldenburg. The Lethe is dammed east of the Baumweg primeval forest.
