The Löbau-Zittau Railway Company received the concession to build the railway line from Löbau to Zittau on June 25, 1845. As part of this, construction began in 1846 on a viaduct designed for two tracks over the Höllengrund valley in Großschweidnitz. Construction lasted two years and was completed in 1847. The church is a plastered rubble stone building with a polygonal chancel, of architectural and local historical significance. A simple neo-Romanesque hall church, built in 1874/75 according to plans by master mason Peschel from Niedercunnersdorf; the tower was erected according to plans by fire insurance inspector Leuthold from Bautzen; it was restored between 1981 and 1993. In 1869, the Englishman Sir William Duncan founded Duncan's Linen Industry AG in Großschweidnitz, on the edge of the Höllengrund valley. Locally, it was known as the English Bleaching Works or the "Engelei" (since Duncan came from England). This was because the majority of the production from his main factory in Rawda, near Leeds, was exported to Germany. The company grew to almost 600 employees by the First World War and was the largest employer in the town until the opening of the Saxon Sanatorium and Nursing Home in 1903.
