The Essing Chair Rock Face > a Geotope The imposing rock face above the town of Neuessing is formed by massive limestones of the Franconian Alb Formation. The reef dome structure, with onion-like, stacked rock bands of this reef complex, is best seen from the road bridge over the Danube-Main Canal. This dome structure is characterized by strong, vertical joints, resulting in crenellated weathering. The rock face itself traces the course of a fault plane. The hollows and rock overhangs at the base of the rock face (immediately behind the houses) were created by the waters of the Altmühl Danube. As significant archaeological finds show, these semi-caves (abri) served as camps for Paleolithic people. Associated paleontological finds provide evidence of climate developments during the last Ice Age.
