North African Roman ruins in leafy Windsor Great Park! This is a really interesting story and worth reading more about after you've seen the ruins. Possibly inspired by Lord Elgin, British officer Hanmer Warrington shipped the ruins of the Temple of Augustus in 1817, with the intention of selling them to The British Museum. However, the museum was not interested, so the Roman temple ruins sat outside the museum for 8 years before being taken to Windsor and erected next to Virginia Water. Gifted to Queen Elizabeth II by Canada and formally installed in June 1958, the Totem Pole has been a conspicuous sight on the shores of Virginia Water ever since. It was given to commemorate the centenary of British Columbia as a crown colony. Tellingly, the pole is 100 feet (30 m) high, one foot for each year.

A beguiling sight, the Ruins were constructed from columns, pedestals and slabs recovered from the vibrant Roman city of Leptis Magna, which was in what is today Libya. The stones that make up the Ruins were gifted to George IV in 1816 and put in place ten years later. Today, they're protected by a fence, having been lovingly restored in 2009.
