A fine view out over Lough Ennell from the eastern shore. From here you can look all the way over to "Lilliput" shoreline, which has quite the literary history. Lilliput was frequently visited by Irish writer Jonathan Swift. Local tradition states that Swift was in a boat on the lake when he looked back at Lilliput and noticed how small the people looked at that distance. Supposedly this became the inspiration for Gulliver's Travels. Lilliput at the time was called "Nure". but after the success of the book, locals began to refer to the lakeshore as Lilliput. the name stuck and today the area is known as Lilliput.

Idyllically located on the Royal Canal, Ballinea Harbour is a gentle 5 km (3 mi) stroll from the nearby town of Mullingar. A delightful spot to stop for a break with a scenic park and refreshments available at the local shop.

Mullingar is a vibrant town in County Westmeath, close to the Royal Canal. This interesting town is well worth a detour to visit the magnificent Cathedral of Christ the King, stunning Belvedere House and gardens, and the historical museum.

Mullingar offers a delightful mix of history, nature, and culture. Mullingar has a lively music scene, often associated with its traditional Irish music heritage, and is home to several festivals throughout the year. The town is also known for its historical landmarks, such as the Mullingar Cathedral and the old Royal Canal.

In Mullingar the Old Railway Track and the Royal Canal Way can be seen, two very nice Greenways connecting West and East Ireland through the beautiful Irish Midlands.

Many of these old bridges are still being used and in good shape.

Wonderful single-arched bridge that spans over the Royal Canal. The bridge was built in 1806 and is a fine example of the architectual heritage of Westmeath.
