Sports are possible at the Großer Pönitzer See and the Pönitz Sports Park. The lake offers swimming areas, including the Klingberg swimming pool, which is patrolled by the DLRG (German Lifesaving Association), and a water access point. The SVG Pönitz sports club offers regular training and sports badge testing at the sports park.

Here you'll find the third stamp at the beekeeper in Gronenberg for the #wanderbareBay hiking pass for the "De bannig groote Tour" tour from the Lübeck Bay Tourism Agency. As a reward for all four stamps along the route, you can pick up a hiking pole nail as a souvenir at the tourist information offices.

The lake has a round shape with a bay in the north and is about 1400 meters long and 1100 meters wide. It has a size of about 108 hectares and a maximum depth of 19.2 meters, which it reaches in the middle. The lake is fed by rather insignificant tributaries.
