From 1523 to 1538, the Lords of Freyberg at Hohenaschau resided here. At that time, Münichau was a center of the Anabaptist movement, as the castle's owner, Helene von Freyberg, had embraced this faith and strongly supported it. However, she was ultimately only able to escape the sad fate of her fellow monks by fleeing. After her return to the Catholic faith, her sons received the confiscated property back from King Ferdinand. From 1538, Münichau was owned by Mattheus Lang von Wellenburg. He likely owed his position as councilor and regent of Innsbruck, as well as the castle, to his cousin, the Cardinal Archbishop of Salzburg, Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg. From 1580 to 1921, the noble estate belonged to the Lords and later Counts of Lamberg. The five-story building, damaged by fire in 1914, was rebuilt – one floor lower – by 1921. A major renovation took place in 1957, when the Harisch brothers converted the estate into a castle hotel. Münichau Castle remains a hotel to this day.

Today's Kitzbühel Town Hall, a historic building in the city center, has a long history closely linked to the city's development. Originally a mining court until 1821, the building was converted into a town hall around 1840. The current building dates from 1954/55. A relief at the entrance commemorates the ski pioneer Franz Reisch, who introduced winter sports to Kitzbühel around 1892/93.

Parish Church of St. Andreas, Kitzbühel from 1506 The church, located on the church hill at the foot of the Lebenberg, was consecrated in 1506 and is the work of Stefan Krumenauer, one of the most important late Gothic architects in the Upper Bavarian-Salzburg region. Inside, artistic styles from a total of seven centuries come together to form a harmonious whole. The high altar of the parish church is a monumental testimony to Kitzbühel's independent artistic position in sculpture and painting around 1650. The tomb of the Kupferschmid family, located under the Langahus walls, is the only monument of the bourgeois Renaissance that has survived in Kitzbühel. Before leaving the church, we recommend a visit to the Rosa Chapel, named after its patron saint, which adjoins the choir to the south. With the Madonna and Child on display and the baptismal font, it contains two witnesses from the time when it was built in the Gothic period. Church of Our Lady, pilgrimage church, Kitzbühel from the 14th century The Church of Our Lady on the church hill outside the historic city center was built in the 14th century as a two-story chapel, the basement of which served as an ossuary. It only received its characteristic 48 m high, massive tower between 1566 and 1569 - the first, representative church bell that was delivered proved to be too big for the slender parish church tower that had been taken over from the previous church. The bell provided the impetus for building a new tower decades later. The altarpiece is a copy of the famous image of Mary Help of Christians by Lucas Cranach, made around 1630 and located in the Innsbruck Cathedral. Behind the Church of Our Lady, in front of the Mesnerstadl, there is a unique view of churches, the mountain cemetery and parts of the old town. The Hahnenkamm and the edge of the Hausberg can also be seen. Text / Source: Kitzbühel Tourism, Hinterstadt 18, 6370 Kitzbühel https://www.kitzbuehel.com/lifestyle/kultur/

City with history: A day in Kitzbühel It has been 750 years since Kitzbühel was granted city rights. What do you think of when you hear Kitzbühel? Of course, the Hahnenkamm race on the Streif, the stars and starlets who like to show up in the chamois city, elegant shops and fine restaurants. But that is by no means all that Kitzbühel has to offer: a visit to the "Stadtl", as the locals affectionately call their city, proves this. Kitzbühel is full of history, culture and has always been way ahead of its time. Because Kitzbühel was on the busy trade route from Chiemsee over the Felbertauern to Venice in earlier times, travelers have always been part of the city. That has not changed to this day: Kitzbühel is a sports and lifestyle metropolis and attracts visitors from all over the world. And today, me too! "If you're here for the first time, you don't feel the need to rush out of the city straight away, but want to stay for a while. It was like that 100 years ago, even then people were strolling here," says Pepi Treichl. The 70-year-old is a Kitzbühel veteran and city guide. My city exploration tour begins with him. During an extensive tour, he tells me why mining, art and an old prison in the middle of the city are just as much a part of Kitzbühel as the Streif. 1월 18, 2025, Kitzbühel Old Town
Kitzbühel then and now... From the Middle Ages, silver and copper deposits allowed the town of Kitzbühel and its surroundings to flourish through mining. As a border town of the Duchy of Bavaria, Kitzbühel's strategic importance increased, which led to its elevation to town status by Duke Ludwig II on June 6, 1271. The town wall, which still forms Kitzbühel's town center today, was subsequently built with the preserved Jochberger Gate and Kirchberger Gate. With the expansion of the railway network in 1875, the economic boom returned as summer resorts became more popular. In 1909, under the leadership of Mayor Franz Reisch, the mud bath was built in the spa park. The Schwarzsee water, with its therapeutic healing effect on rheumatic diseases, skin and gynecological ailments, was pumped from the Schwarzsee directly into the bathing area through a specially built water pipe. This was another milestone for Kitzbühel and tourism at the time. You can find out more about the history of the region in the Kitzbühel Museum.
