Beautiful windmill in the Zuiderpark. When I was there, the blades were turning and it was a wonderful sight. I immediately thought of the old Dutch hit: "Da bij de Mole, de moje Mole........"

In the rainy season you can use the stepping stones here. An adventure, especially for little hikers.

The history of this mill as a grinding tool is rather obscure. Already at the beginning of the 20th century 'De Zandweg' fell out of operation and fell into disrepair. When the municipality of Rotterdam bought the mill in 1959, it was in downright desolate condition.

A large number of animals can be seen on the Molenwei, such as those found on traditional Dutch farms. For example, there are cows, goats, sheep, donkeys, pigs, chickens, geese, ducks and rabbits. Why does a cow give milk? How does an egg get into the shop? Where does meat come from? These are logical questions, but not for many city children. Thanks to the animals, they gain insight into food from the agricultural sector.

In 1591, Cornelis van Coolwijk commissioned the construction of Landhuis De Oliphant in the newly dike polder near the Nieuwe Sluis on the island of Voorne. Van Coolwijk lived in Delft "In de Gulden Olyphant". His house's name didn't just come out of the blue. He would have been active in the lucrative ivory trade and as steward had interests in Voorne. His newly built farm, with its octagonal turret, was to resemble a small castle and thus reveal its influence and prestige. The client's pretensions were also expressed in the gable stone in the form of a Gothic pointed arch above the tower entrance, on which an elephant with a castle on its back is depicted. The golden coats of arms with a long black point in the middle, which are in the two corners of the facing brick, cannot be attributed to Van Coolwijk either. The elephant was associated with triumph and fame, concepts that are also reminiscent of the trumpet shape of the trunk. That is why our country house is called "De Oliphant".
