10월 8, 2025, Suvorov Monument on the Gotthard Pass

General Alexandr W. Suworow Monument, San Gottardo Alexander Suvorov 1729 or 1730 –1800) was a Russian general in service of the Russian Empire. He was the last Generalissimo of the Russian Empire. Suvorov is considered one of the greatest military commanders in Russian history. He was awarded numerous medals, titles, and honors by Russia, as well as by other countries. Suvorov secured Russia’s expanded borders and renewed military prestige and left a legacy of theories on warfare. He never lost a single major battle he had commanded. Suvorov is highly esteemed among Swiss people as he saved their country from the invasion of Napoleon. His troops took Saint Gothhard pass and the famous Devil’s Bridge, guarded by the French troops. The Swiss campaign was Suvorov’s last glorious campaign. He died soon after that in 1800. Cappella di San Gottardo - Chapel at the Gotthard Hospice The St. Gotthard Pass was first used as a pass starting in the 13th century, and the hospice, built at the behest of Milanese Archbishop Galdino (1171), also dates from this period. A chapel was built alongside the hospice on the site of a small church dating back to the 9th/10th century. It was rebuilt towards the end of the 18th century at the instigation of the Capuchins, who managed the hospice until 1799. St. Gotthard Pass The Gotthard Pass divides waterways and connects various cultural and linguistic areas. Its significance as an "Alpine transversal" began at the beginning of the 13th century with the construction of the legendary Devil's Bridge in the Schöllenen Gorge. For many centuries, trade caravans (trading cattle and cheese for grain, wine, rice, and salt), mercenaries, messengers, and even entire armies crossed the pass. Between 1818 and 1836, the canton of Uri, with the help of other cantons, expanded the pass road, thus achieving its predominance among Swiss Alpine passes. The Gotthard Pass has significantly shaped the economy and culture of Central Switzerland for centuries. Until the opening of the Gotthard Railway in 1882, the Gotthard Pass was also used in winter. Dozens of roadmen and shovel workers were employed for this purpose. In 1922, the post bus replaced the stagecoach, and with the introduction of gasoline duties in 1923, the expansion of the pass roads began, continuing to this day. The old pass road on the south side, the Tremola between the top of the pass and Airolo, is still preserved and passable. This stretch of road recalls more tranquil journeys over the Gotthard that occurred not so long ago. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Gotthard Pass was "condensed" into a myth, a symbol of Switzerland's independence, unity, and identity. Sasso San Gottardo - In the once top-secret, legendary Gotthard Fortress In the once top-secret, legendary Gotthard Fortress is the unique Sasso San Gottardo Museum with two sections: "Exhibitions": The Gotthard Myth, Crystal Cavern, Chamber of Curiosities, Energy Cavern, Gotthard Watershed Light Show, as well as the first and only permanent exhibition in Switzerland about Goethe and his three Gotthard journeys. On the grand tour, in addition to the exhibitions, you can take the Metro del Sasso into the "historic fortress." There, hidden deep within the mountain, are faithfully preserved troop barracks, cannon emplacements, and ammunition magazines. A side tunnel also leads to the panoramic platform with a stunning view! Opening hours are June to mid-October; Details at https://www.sasso-sangottardo.ch/ Text / Source: myswitzerland.com https://www.myswitzerland.com/de-ch/erlebnisse/fondazione-sasso-san-gottardo/

Sasso San Gottardo Fortress with Extensive Caverns Sasso San Gottardo is located in the extensive caverns and tunnels of the legendary Gotthard Fortress. Once top secret, it is now the largest publicly accessible fortification in Switzerland. The exhibitions in the Crystal Cavern, the Chamber of Curiosities, and the Caverna Grande explore the "Gotthard Myth" in all its facets. Guests can take the "Metro del Sasso" to the historic fortress. During World War II, it was part of General Guisan's legendary redoubt. Hidden deep within the mountain are ammunition magazines, troop barracks, and cannon emplacements. The tour concludes through a side tunnel to the spectacularly situated viewing platform. Goethe Exhibition The focus of the first permanent exhibition about Goethe in Switzerland is on his three Gotthard journeys. He not only found inspiration and adventure in the region around the Gotthard, but also collected numerous minerals there for his scientific studies. Without Goethe's journeys to the Gotthard Pass, the Tell legend would not have become a famous stage drama, and William would not have become a legendary Swiss national hero. The special exhibition "From Goethe's Tell to the Spiritual Defense of the Country" explores these connections. Text / Source: Uri Museums https://www.museen-uri.ch/museen/sasso-san-gottardo

"Sasso San Gottardo Fortress" The fortress, one of the largest underground defense systems in Switzerland, operated as a top-secret military facility until 2001. Today, visitors have the opportunity to explore the extensive tunnels and experience a touch of history. The underground funicular "Metro del Sasso" takes visitors to the historic fortress, where gun rooms, ammunition depots, accommodations, and command centers are concealed. One of the mysterious passages leads to an exit in a rock face and to the viewing platform, which offers an impressive panorama. Goethe, General Guisan, and the Gotthard Myth. Two figures contributed significantly to the Gotthard myth: the poet laureate Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and General Henri Guisan. Goethe traveled the Gotthard three times, was inspired by the majestic mountain landscape, and collected numerous rock and mineral samples for his geological studies. The Sasso San Gottardo houses the first nationwide permanent exhibition on Goethe's Gotthard journeys. It demonstrates Goethe's fascination with this place and the significance of his research into the Tell legend for Swiss history. In the historic fortress, a permanent exhibition offers insights into the life and work of Henri Guisan, Switzerland's last general. As Commander-in-Chief of the Swiss Army during World War II, he established the famous Reduit strategy, which focused on the numerous fortifications in the Alpine region, including the Gotthard Fortress. The Tell legend, once made famous by Goethe and his friend Schiller, became an important element of the nation's intellectual defense during the construction of the fortifications.
