A municipality of about 1,500 inhabitants in the Canton of Ticino, Airolo is located at the foot of the Gotthard Pass. It is well-known among cyclists as the starting point of the famous Tremola panoramic road.

Located 5 minutes from Airolo train station (westward toward the Gotthard Pass), this building features magnificent murals. At its center is the popular "Gotthard Post" painting (the original was painted by Rudolf Koller in 1873 and is housed in the Zurich National Museum). Airolo has a charming, winding old town. The church, "Chiesa dei Santi Nazario e Celso," dates back to the 6th/7th century, but was partially destroyed in the devastating Airolo fire of 1877 and then rebuilt. The Romanesque bell tower dates back to the 12th century. Restoration work and archaeological research were carried out between 1995 and 1998. I really liked the church, and it has wonderful acoustics, but the songbooks are, of course, only in Italian… 😉
