The story goes that in Sandavágur, a shepherd was tending his flock in the mountains. He spotted a beautiful young woman in a striking red dress. He was immediately captivated and fell in love with her. However, whenever he approached her, she disappeared, only to reappear further away. This went on for a while, and the shepherd tried desperately to catch up with her, but never succeeded. Eventually, he realized that she was not a human woman, but a huldra (also known as the huldrevolk or hidden people)—a mythical creature from Scandinavian folklore, often depicted as beautiful and seductive, but with a hollow back or a tail and living in the wild. The huldra are known for luring people, especially men, into the mountains or their realm.

We start in Miðvágur, pay the entrance fee for the first time on this vacation, and walk up the Trælanípa cliff toward the waterfall. Trælanípa (Faroese for Slave Cliff) is a 148-meter-high cliff on the south coast of the island of Vágar. It's a popular tourist destination and offers spectacular views of Lake Leitisvatn, which appears to float above the sea. The name "Slave Cliff" comes from the old legend that disabled Irish slaves were pushed into the sea from here. There are hiking trails leading to the cliff. However, we are only allowed to take one path because it is still breeding season...🪺🐣🐤

First, we visit the Múlafossur waterfall, which plunges over 20 meters into the sea over a vertical cliff. Here, we also see four puffins 😃.

The Leitisvatn flows into the sea with a small waterfall.

Alternative (instead of charging a toll): choose the eastern route, directly along the bottom of the lake. There is no toll charge there, but it may be closed for bird protection reasons... And another option (for those with a bit of stamina): go around the lake to the west and just walk through the "toll booth" on the way back. But be careful: crossing the lake outflow (at the waterfall) requires surefootedness and you can't do it without getting your feet wet. It's best to take sandals with you.
