This is a great lookout point, and a good turnaround point if you're only out for a day hike and don't want to hike down the switchbacks to the bottom of the crater. But if you're up for hiking just a little more there's another great viewpoint, Rainbow Bridge, where you can soak up more views and not have to climb very far back up the wall of the crater.

Kaihalulu Beach on Maui's east coast is also known as Red Sand Beach. As the name suggests, the red color of the sand, which comes from the hill at the northern end of the bay, is characteristic of the place. Due to its somewhat hidden and secluded location, the beach is often deserted. However, the path down is only recommended for experienced hikers. You reach Kaihalulu Beach via a sloping, slippery path - sure-footedness is required here.
