In the Middle Ages, Vianden was a fortified town, surrounded by a ring wall with 24 semicircular towers and five city gates. In 1679, Marshal de Boufflers had parts of the wall demolished, so that only remnants remain today. Around 1850, the last two city gates – the upper gate in the upper town and the bridge gate – were also removed, as they were considered an obstacle.

The term "shell tower" refers to a tower that was usually open or only lightly fortified on the side facing away from the town, thus serving as a convenient defensive or observation post. In the Middle Ages, Vianden was surrounded by a ring wall with numerous towers.

The bridge connects the old town with the lower town of Vianden. The statue there is a replica; the original is located in the nearby Église Saint-Nicolas. The original statue of John of Nepomuk dates from around 1740.

Be sure to take the path along the city wall. Great photo opportunities, views of the city's rooftops and the castle. The entrances are signposted.
