It is the 8th century. Lord Hubert (born in Aquitaine around 660 into an aristocratic family) is a hunting enthusiast to the point that he sometimes forgets his primary duties. Leading a worldly life, he cares little for religion. The more he hunts, the further he moves away from God. One Good Friday, instead of going to mass, he cannot resist an uncontrollable urge to go hunting. Having found no one to accompany him, he sets off alone to indulge in his favorite passion. Legend has it that he found himself face to face with an extraordinary deer. The latter was carrying a luminous crucifix between its antlers. The deer's voice then growled: "Hubert! Hubert! How long will you pursue beasts in the forests? How long will this vain passion make you forget the salvation of your soul? Hubert, seized with fear, threw himself to the ground and questioned the vision: “Lord! What must I do?” “Go then to Lambert, my bishop in Maastricht,” the voice continued. “Repent. Do penance for your sins, as you will be taught.” The stag is said to have converted Hubert and to have pushed him to become, later, bishop of Tongeren and Maastricht as successor of Saint Lambert. Popular belief made him a converted hunter and a healer of rabies. Over the centuries, his cult spread, making him a true myth (the legend took on its full importance from the 15th century). Called to God on May 30, 727, he was canonized on November 3, 743, a day on which he is still celebrated today.
